Day 179 - Excited!

Something cool is going on tomorrow - well, to me it's cool, maybe not to some, but I am excited about it all the same. So it's quiz time - what is it? Here's the hint: You'll know what it is by looking at my pictures on Saturday. I think that makes it pretty easy but maybe not.
So today was a good day but again super busy so sorry for not too much info again. Here's the log and pics:

Day 178 - In demand!

Hey everyone! Still so busy, but it is better than feeling useless that's for sure. I have so much to do before the 15th it is not even funny so I probably won't be doing very long posts here, just know I am going strong and on a mission to be in the best shape of my life come summer. So here's today's log, not 100% but I wasn't feeling too well. It would have been way worse in the old days, I made myself do alot of things that normally I would have just written off as a bad day and went buck wild. So no terrible binges, still did my workout, etc. Making progress every day...

Day 177 - Quickie

Well I finally got around to everyone's blog to check on their progress and of course all are doing fantastic! I love that all of us are working so hard at the same time and have similar timelines. It really helps the accountability for me. It is getting late, however, so I don't have time to say much, but I did want to thank everyone who has commented on my blog the past few days - I don't have time to individually respond to all of them, but I will from now on since I won't be behind any more. But thanks for checking in and for all the continued support.
Things have been going well, I am enjoying the PN plan but not following it exactly. I am getting good results so far so I am not worried. I think I have found a good balance of what my body responds to (finally!). As far as TT goes, I am finding the workouts too easy for me so I am going to step it up to the next workout in the list tomorrow. I am supposed to give it until the end of this week and get in two more workouts, but I need something harder for sure. Plus, the current workout does nothing for shoulders or arms and has legs both days so I am doing legs three times a week plus cardio on the off days and that's too much. So I need to balance it out. If the next plan doesn't do this, I might do some kind of hybrid. I like the exercises themselves, I just don't really like the layout and frequency. There are only two workouts that I am supposed to alternate and that is pretty boring for me, I need at least 3 and preferably 4 so I can do something different each day of the week. So we'll see, I might have to do some switching around, but it is all good.
For today, I only had 5 meals because I got up late so I'm still giving myself the points because it was still every 3 hrs. I just couldn't get started today...Also I didn't do my HIIT as scheduled but I did have Jujitsu so I am still giving myself a point for that as well. Aren't I so nice to myself? Here's today's log and pics (back to the fun blue today!):

Day 176 - Still behind...

Well it is crazy trying to catch back up on all the Shreddersphere blogging, and it was only 3 days. Man we are a busy bunch. Today was really much more on track, just have tons going on so not much time to really check in with everyone or go into much detail right now. Sorry I've been a little out of the loop, hopefully I will be able to make some more time to catch up soon, but for now things are really busy but in a good way and for a good reason that I will talk about later on. On another good note, though, I lost 3 pounds last week and over 1% body fat so yay me! So glad for that. Measurements didn't change much, but you know how that goes, everything doesn't change at the same time. Here's the stats:

Weight: 146 lbs (loss of 3#)
Omron bf: 23.4% (loss of 1.2%)
Bicep: 11.25" (no change)
Chest: 34.5" (loss of .5")

Stomach: 31" (no change)
Hips: 37" (no change)
Butt: 40.5" (no change)

Talk to all of you more soon, I hope! Until then, here's my log:

Day 175 - Damage Control

Well, I'm back but being away really set me back. I tried to plan as well as I could, and I started out good, but got worse as time went on. But I'm moving on and tomorrow will be better. But my accountability score is really crappy now. I'm really going to have to step it up to make things better coming up, but here's where I am now, all the missing logs. Gotta run, will be catching up more tomorrow!

Here's Friday, finished the day well and even resisted a pizza party that night.

Still not where I want to be, but it really makes it obvious where I am lacking in discipline. I'll keep on it. Also be catching up on everyone's blog posts tomorrow, I was working on business stuff most of the day so didn't check up. Talk to you all soon!

Day 173 - JP's cooking explosion

Okay, as promised, here is the treat I was talking about: I did a cooking video! It is kind of long, but let me know what you think. Below is the written recipe (as I made it) and nutritional info in case you want to make it for yourself.

Lush Lime Quinoa
1-1/2 cups water
1 cup quinoa (rinsed)
2 Tb olive oil
1/2 cup lime juice
1/4 cup chopped sweet onion
1 medium cucumber, chopped
1-1/2 chopped bell peppers, variety of colors
1/2 cup almonds, chopped
garlic sea salt to taste
dried cilantro to taste
4 oz grilled chicken
Preparation:
1) Boil water in medium saucepan. Add quinoa, cover, and reduce heat to low. Cook for 15 minutes or until all water is absorbed.
2) Place all other ingredients in a bowl and add cooked quinoa. Gently mix well. Makes 6 servings

I know it's kind of high in fat but it is good fat and can easily be reduced by only using 1 Tbs of oil or less almonds. Hope you like it!

As far as the rest of my day will be going, I am leaving at 4:30 for Baltimore so I won't be back on until Saturday night, but I made protein bars to take with me for snacks and I have some more proatmeal pancakes to eat for my breakfast tomorrow, the other meals will be out and I will just be having salads with chicken or some other protein/veggie combo that is available. There's a fitness center at the hotel so I will be doing my 30 min cardio there tomorrow morning.
So far today, things have been great. I did my workouts this morning and got to sleep in, going out to lunch with Jeff but that will still be a clean meal. Here's my log so far, and my pics. I'll update the rest tomorrow:

Day 172 - Wrapping up a good day

Well the day went well, good news all around and I got my points back up to 100% for the day so yay me! Jujitsu tonight was great again, I did ground fighting with 5 people in a row and still wasn't that winded. I am so happy! I haven't even been working on my endurance, but between doing regular HIIT and losing 18 lbs (more of fat), my abilities have really skyrocketed. I am so excited! So that was a great end to my day. I be back tomorrow with that special thing I promised and my plan for while I am in Baltimore. Thanks for all the comments and checking in everyone is doing, it helps me so much! Keep on shredding everyone - only 52 days left!

Day 172 - A Run!

So I actually went for a run today...those of you who know me best must now pick themselves off the floor because they fell off their chair from utter amazement. I'll give you a minute... :) Well I didn't die, as evidenced by this blog post, so it's possible that I will do it again in the future but man I am so not a runner. I don't even know how to do it right. I mean, I can make my legs go faster than a walk and thus be running, but I don't know how to breathe or anything. But what happened was I didn't do my HIIT after my workout yesterday, so I had to do the whole warm up and such, and it was going to take 20 min which I just couldn't bear to do running in place and it's kind of a nice day, so I thought I'd try it. And Jedi wanted to as well. So I can't run in my neighborhood, it's too dangerous for my little pup because he's a zig-zagger, so we went to the little park 2 minutes from my house and did our HIIT. It was a pretty easy set of intervals, but I needed to start as a beginner since I was doing a "real" run, not in place. It is so different. So we went 1.5 miles in 20 minutes total (counting warm up and cool down), alternating between running and slow walking in 2 min intervals. So technically I only did 6 minutes of actual running, but it was pretty good. Lungs burned a little, it was a little chilly. Jedi really liked it, he was so happy. And here I wasn't sure if his little legs would get too tired. Nope, he's a beast. So that's the workout for the day, food intake is good so far, but I gotta roll out and get some work done. Also, I am going it Baltimore tomorrow afternoon into Saturday and I will not be bringing the laptop so I hope all of you can survive 24 hrs without me :) I have to go to the MK Career Conference. It is usually pretty fun but I have to plan my meals carefully because they do not have good food choices there. They act like it is, but they have no clue. Anyway, pics will posted tonight, have a special treat for everyone tomorrow that I am working on, but here's the plan for the day:

Day 171 - Weird Day...

Well today did not go as planned but it was still okay. I decided to give blood this afternoon, so I did have a box of raisins after that at 1:45 that's not on the chart. It was better than the cookies and cheez-its that were the other choices. Then I decided to have a free meal for dinner because I was feeling a little run down, so it was unplanned but still allowed so I am giving myself a point still for that. Everything else was good today, so here's the chart and my pics:

Okay, well I just realized today when I tried to show the ECSS pushup video to a friend that it was not the correct one with the whole video on it. I was wondering why no one had anything to say about it...so here's the right one...it starts off the same as the other one but is the entire contest...

Day 171 - The plan

So I'm just going to do my plan right now, pics tonight, because I have a lot to get done IRL today, not that I wouldn't love to just sit here in front of my computer and wait for shredders to update their blogs all day, because I could do that seriously. It's like half my life now. Maybe more... :)
I already missed a point today because I didn't get enough sleep last night. Went to bed at 11:30 and woke up at 5, made breakfast and lunch for Jeff, had my shake, did my AVP, then fell asleep on the couch at about 6:30 for maybe an hour. I just was sitting there one minute, asleep the next. Anyway, that's what has put me behind today so I'll see you later!

Day 170 - No April Fools!

Okay, so who wants to see a truly hideous before picture of me? Not me, but I thought I would share this just to remind myself not to ever go back. I have been getting comments on my "new" suit that I have been wearing in my BBS pics but I have actually had that suit for a while. It was from Victoria's Secret because that's the only place where I could buy a top and bottom at different sizes. You can see if you compare this before pic from May 2007 with my side shots from today, it is fitting me much better these days. (Yes, the top is different - I bought two with the one bottom - one for activity, one for tanning - it's a girl thing...) Actually, it might end up too big for me, I think I might have stretched it out (yikes!) I still have progress to make, but it is so much better now than before. So here's a tiny piece of redemption...(see, my picture can't even look at itself!)

OUCH! That was very painful. Everything all hanging out...delete delete delete! Okay, on to better times: TODAY! First off (well, I guess second actually) before I get to the nerdy chartyness, I thought I would share some Shredder Scripture. This is especially for someone who I now consider a very good of mine, but it is also for anyone else who wants some inspiration. Here goes:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1

"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

And finally, when you don't think you can get in one more rep...
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." Isaiah 10:29 :)

So that's my message for the day...things went pretty much according to plan again today, it started raining during our walk so I cut it short by about 5 min (Mr. Delicate Jedi doesn't like rain) but got most of it in. Then Jujitsu tonight topped it off with a nice workout as well so I feel pretty good. Nutrition was good, I did have two feedings with starchy carbs instead of just one but both were within 3 hrs of exercise so I think I was still good there. I tried quinoa today! It was the recipe Lilla had on her site and it was great (Thanks!). More on that in upcoming days...Anyway, I didn't have any carbs after my workout tonight so I'm thinking it all balances out. I had green tea in place of one of my glasses of water today and I'm just finishing up my last cup so I'm good to go with that. I gotta go now or I'll get negative sleep points so here's the chart:

Day 170 - BBS Heats up the ShredderSphere!

Well from looking around the blogs, I think fellow shredders Lynda, CeeKaye, and Bec are joining the NY4 in our Beach Body Shred. Any other takers? It is so exciting to be doing this as a group with the same finish date - it just seems to make things easier!
So after the new workout yesterday I am starting to get some good DOMS, can't wait until tomorrow when they really set in! I think the think that really did it was the split squats. I always used to just call those lunges but I guess the difference is whether you put your feet back together each time or not. At least, that's the only difference I can tell. Well, when I started out training, I was afraid of doing BB squats on my own, plus I didn't know how much weight I could do, and I did not have a bar pad so it killed my shoulders and neck. So all I did were DB lunges (which I guess were actually split squats because I didn't step back every time to save my knees). I eventually fixed all of those problems and worked up to higher weight so I couldn't even do DB lunges anymore because it wasn't enough weight. For some reason it never occurred to me to do them with the bar. Duh. So anyway, long story long, yesterday I did the split squat with the bar and it was quite a difference. Actually, I way overestimated how much weight I could do because I was comparing it with what I do for a normal squat, so I actually overdid it in the beginning, which is probably where some of the soreness is coming from as well. I should have dropped some weight. But it is definitely much more on the hamstrings and glutes than the regular squats so I am glad for that because I was getting tired of deadlifts.
So today my TT plan says to do 30 min of light activity so I think I'll go take a walk with my favorite little guy Jedi because it is pretty warm today. Plus I have Jujitsu tonight so that will be a little extra. Only doing 3 workouts a week scares me so I think I might be working in extra cardio/activity but I don't want to overdo it so I'll stick to the plan closely for the first week or two and then see by my results if I want to ramp it up some. Plus there are other TT plans to choose from so I can switch those as well, although I believe that most, if not all, of them are a 3 workout per week schedule. Just doesn't feel like enough but we'll see. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I am still also so excited that I got through the HIIT yesterday. You don't understand how much I hate (delete delete, I mean LOVE) cardio. Even HIIT has been tough for me in the past but I think it is more of a mental block than a physical one because I did it yesterday and I didn't die. And my knees and/or feet don't hurt today so I just need to get through it and I know I'll feel much better. Anyway, that's the rest of the story from yesterday, here's the plan for the day and my pics:

P.S. In case you are wondering, AVP stands for affirmation, visualization, and prayer. It is a habit that I have steadily been getting better at doing over the last few months and having it on my chart really helps reinforce this. I do my AVP for all aspects of my life, not just for my physique transformation goals, because I have many other things that I am reaching for in my life.

Day 169 - Evening update!

Well today went great! All nutrition was compliant and pretty much on time, some a little late but still within a close enough window. I drank all the water I was supposed to, and that's something I have struggled with in the past, but for some reason it was no problem today. The first TT workout I did was interesting - I wasn't sure if it was going to be hard enough because I am used to lifting heavier weights, but it was pretty good so we'll see after a few weeks. And I did HIIT as well, which was great because I have been slacking off on cardio lately and it got me back into it. So here's the log for the day:

Yay me 100%!! I have so much to do tomorrow that I didn't get to today work-wise so I'll sign off now and get to sleep. Keep on shredding!

SPECIAL - THE RESULTS ARE IN!

Well the pushup challenge was neck and neck there for a while, and look at the final vote! Exactly dead even. Well thanks to all those who voted for me and all I have to say about Adam's total is, Adam, quit voting for yourself. No stuffing the ballot box! Just kidding! It is actually really funny that the vote was like that, and you can see why if you watch this video carefully...

Actually, my form was pretty sad there at the end and I think Adam felt bad for me since he was still going when I stopped so I think he could have done a few more. Plus, after seeing those training pictures on his blog, I think he's about 10 times stronger than me. So I'm going to concede the crown to him but I expect a rematch next time around! Thanks for indulging me Adam :) Sorry this is the kind of thing I do for fun :)

P.S. Don't miss today's other post (below) regarding Day 1 of the latest Shred!!

Day 169 - Mission 3 Phase 2 BEGINS!

Well it is finally here - the start of another SHRED! This will be my Mission 3 overtime since I did not fully realize all my goals from it yet, so I will continue on until I do so. The NY4 have decided to all shred together the next 8 weeks to get ready for summer, so we are unveiling the "New York Four Beach Body Shred" today, Day 1, which will run until Memorial Day weekend, Day 56, May 25, 2008. This shred will be my greatest ever, and will be successful because of the fabulous ladies I have have shredding along beside me: Debbie, Suzette, and Lilla. Check out their blogs and cheer them on!
My goals for this mission are outlined above, and I will reach or exceed all of them in the next 56 days NO MATTER WHAT! I will have two blog posts each day, one in the morning to lay out my plan for the day and post my daily pics, and one in the evening to show what I accomplished that day and post my daily accountability log. I also plan on doing some fun videos interspersed in there - at least one a week but hopefully more.
I will be using BFFM as my guidebook, as I always do, for all aspects of this mission, but also Precision Nutrition for the baseline nutrition and recipes, and Turbulence Training for the weights and HIIT.
So here's the scary part - I am committing to having my picture taken in a bikini with my car (aka The Shredder Mobile) at the end of the mission and posting the pics up here. That may sound weird since I already post pics of myself in a bikini up here every day, but this is different because the daily pics to me are more for documentation purposes, all business, and I routinely pick them apart viciously. These after pics will be fun and I will be happy with my body in them. That will be a change for me and makes me nervous, but in a motivating way. It's hard to explain, but I am going for something like this:

Only more muscular, not so skinny like they are - I couldn't find any with the right body and a car. My visualization picture for my body is this:

So, anyway, that's the big news that's been in the works lately. And here's my plan for the day, I get one point for completing it by the end of the day and none for not doing it, simple as that. I'll fill in the points in tonight's post:

Day 168 - ECSS 30 Day Reveal

So here's the first of the exciting things coming up, the official REVEAL from ECSS. The bikini pics are actually a few days later because ECSS was so busy I forgot to bring my bikini! So I just did a pic in my workout clothes and put that at the bottom of this post as well. Honestly, I am not satisfied with the progress in this 30 day span but there are still changes. And more changes will be coming soon. So enjoy these pics!

Don't forget to check out Suzette, Debbie, and Lilla's reveals as well!

Special Notice - Voting closes today!

Just a reminder that voting on the pushup challenge winner ends at midnight tonight and the results and winner will be announced tomorrow. Right now the voting is pretty tight, 43% to 56%, so every vote counts!
I'll be by to unveil other exciting exploits later on today, but otherwise today (as have been the last 5 days) is a rest day, gearing up for big things ahead. Plus I needed that long to recover from Tom's workout, (Adam I don't know how you're doing it!) I swear that's the longest stint of DOMS I've ever had! Thanks man! Actually, it probably would have been better if I was training, but I was only doing Jujitsu so that's not weights. However, I forgot to mention that on Thursday, I did my first dynamic ground work since last year's tournament and it felt great! I am so much stronger and have so much more wind than before it was so AWESOME! It was just a quick round, but I got up and wasn't even breathing hard, and believe me, everyone was because it is unlike any kind of exercise you usually get. I guess you would call it mostly isometric, because you move very little, but you are struggling against another human trying to pin you down, so it is very tiring. So needless to say, I was very happy to be in good form even though I am not even in tournament prep mode yet. Once I start that, man, I'll be force to be reckoned with (I hope!). That will be my redemption, winning this year where I lost last year. Actually, it isn't even the winning against the other person that I care about, it's the fact that I was so winded that I couldn't even defend myself, and that was scary. So if I can just win over my own body, I'll be satisfied. Winning the event would be a bonus.
So anyway, that's why I have not been talking much about training and nutrition, and though I have not been training, nutrition has been passable. Mostly clean with a few reward meals, and then tomorrow it's back in action. A mini-vacation, but I'm ready to go back "home" to the Shredder World :) See you later on!

Day 167 - Big things coming...

Today's post will be short since I was such a windbag yesterday and I also will probably be so tomorrow because there will be some very exciting things to talk about then. Haven't gotten everything all verified yet but check back tomorrow and Monday for all the info that's fit to print. I am so excited! Thanks to all who have been on and putting up comments - I love hearing that people are reading and following my journey. I'll also be doing more videos in the upcoming weeks in conjunction with this announcement coming tomorrow so check back often for more interesting content. Talk to you all soon!

Day 166 - How Bad?

Still have lots to go over about ECSS, but if you have been following Adam's blog, you know that we are only releasing some of the things now and it is up to him how we do that, so you'll just have to be patient for a little longer. I know, the suspense is killing you all.
In the mean time, I thought I would put a little question out to you that we talked about somewhat at ECSS. It has come up again and again since I started making visible progress on my journey and Thursday it happened again. Several people complimented me on how I look (YAY!) and I said thanks with a smile. Then my one friend asked the most common follow up question to that, which is WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Other common iterations of this are WHAT DIET ARE YOU ON? WHAT'S THE SECRET? and my personal favorite I NEED A COPY OF THAT DIET YOU'RE ON (this one was from my mother-in-law).
So to all of you out there, if you are following the Shredder Lifestyle, how do you explain to people what you do and the role blogging and this community play in your transformation?
So many people out there (almost everyone, it seems) still think there's a "magic bullet" to weight loss, as made fun of in the video below. They are always looking for the next biggest, best thing. And actually, part of the problem is of course that many are just looking for "weight loss", not physique transformation, which are of course two totally different things. People (especially women) want to get down to that magic number they weighed when they got married, or in high school, or whenever that they felt they looked the best. And for some, that number may even be reasonable, but the quest for particular numbers often derails people in the pursuit of fitness and health. Because if you are only looking at the scale, you will try anything to get those numbers down, regardless of the health or body composition cost.
I have seen so many crazy fad diets, pills, and potions out there it makes me sick because they just focus on the pounds and on nothing else. Or people just starve themselves as long as they can because it makes the numbers go down, and then they get so hungry they binge and they go right back up, fatter than before because they burned precious muscle during starvation. Then their metabolism is slower because they burned muscle and then they have a harder time next time around losing, so they try something even more drastic. And they complain that "nothing works, I've tried everything!"
Well you haven't tried EVERYTHING, because if you had, you would have tried this and you would be on your way where you want to go. So if you are desperate enough to "try anything", why not try what will actually make a difference: CLEAN EATING and HARD SHREDDING!! Not as easy to sell, is it? As Tom V says "quick and easy sells, long and difficult does not". But that's the problem, because long and difficult works. People say they want to lose weight, but really most people aren't willing to do "anything", they are just willing to do anything that doesn't interfere with their regular life routine and they don't have to push themselves. It's so out of some people's realm that they aren't even willing to try.
Of course there are volumes already written on this topic, but sometimes it just really strikes me because people want to know what I am doing, and when I tell them all of the things I do: eat 5-6 meals a day, lift weights, avoid processed food, eat protein at every meal, don't drink alcohol, HIIT, learn all I can about fitness and nutrition, participate in support through this blog, etc etc, they do not want to hear it. So after I spend all that time being honest with them about how it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle and that you have to lift weights to get results, and so on, all they wanted to hear was "low carb" or "weight watchers" or whatever. They look at me kind of funny and think "wow, that's too much trouble", I'm sure. They don't really want it.
There's a song out there, How Bad Do You Want It? by Tim McGraw and that's how I try to live my life. The song says: "People always ask me, son what does it take, to reach out and touch your dreams, to them I always say: Are you hungry? Are you thirsty? Is it a fire that burns you up inside? How bad do you want it? How bad do you need it? Are you eating, sleeping, dreaming, with that one thing on your mind? How bad do you want it? Cause if you want it all you've gotta lay it all out on the line."
So that's the attitude I try to take - really with everything, and of course I'll never be 100%, but people who really want a change in their life have to ACTUALLY be willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES. If they aren't, then they don't want it as bad as they say they do. If the pain of staying the same is less than the pain of change, nothing will happen. I see it all the time. People ask you a question, acting like you are the expert, since you are doing it, but when you don't tell them the answer they are expecting, all of a sudden they don't want your advice. "Oh, I don't want to have to do all that!" Well, then I hope you're happy being fat and tired because it will only get worse the older you get. And you don't have to be "overweight" to be fat either, I see that alot, too.
But I guess that's the way of the world these days. It's like half the country's population dying of cancer, and we know of a cure, but you have to put forth effort every day, and it's not even really that hard, it just requires a little planning, time, and discipline, and people are saying, nope, I'd rather just die of cancer. WHAT??? We're too busy scheduling our lives and never enjoying them. Because you can't enjoy your life when you are unhappy about yourself and if you have ever said "I want to lose weight" or any other version of that, you are unhappy with how you look. And being unhappy about how you look is either a result of or the cause of poor self image. I truly believe that's a fact. Because if you really cared as much about yourself as you think you do, you'd make the effort to improve. No matter what.
So why not take that step to REAL physique transformation? I PROMISE THE WORK AND EFFORT ARE WORTH IT. Discipline does pay off. Believe me, on the other side, you will wonder what you were thinking all those times when you wanted to do something crazy to lose that weight. I've been there. I still keep that nearly-full bottle of pills in my cabinet to remind me to never ever EVER be there again. Even if I would have lost "weight" with them, I would have been too ashamed to tell others how I did it. And I wouldn't look as good as I do now, even if the scale read the same as it does today. And my self esteem would be even lower. And I would eventually have to stop taking them and I would go right back to where I started. And I never would have found this fantastic group of people who I can truly call friends.
So for all those reasons, I beg you, if you really want lasting change, ask us how we did it. And listen to our answer. And be willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES.
